From Rolling Stone Magazine: Hear Hellyeah Cover Phil Collins With Lost Dimebag Darrell Guitar Performance

Heavy metal supergroup Hellyeah had finished recording the basic tracks for fifth album Unden!able when they started throwing around ideas for a cover song to add to the mix. Guitarist Christian Brady suggested the 1982 Phil Collins song “I Don’t Care Anymore,” and drummer Vinnie Paul burst out laughing — not because he thought it was a bad idea, but because he and his late brother Dimebag Darrell, both of legendary metal band Pantera, recorded the track around 10 years ago with their follow-up band Damageplan. The version went unused.

Vinnie Paul speaks out about his upcoming show at Rock On The Range in Columbus, Ohio. It’s his first time playing there since Dimebag Darrell’s death in 2004.

“It’s taken me a long time to really get in the right headspace to where I feel like it was time to do it. And it wasn’t anything specific; we’ve been offered to do it just about every year since HELLYEAH’s been together. And this year, it just kind of hit me. I said, ‘You know what? I think it’s time for the people there to hear what we do and to go back and just do my thing and show a little love to my brother.’ I know the crowd’s gonna be chanting ‘Dimebag!’ It’s gonna be huge, so it’s gonna be awesome.”

While frontmen and guitarists get a lot of the glory in rock bands, drummers are very much a driving force behind the music, especially when it comes to hard rock and heavy metal. In the gallery above, we salute the men behind the kit with our picks for the Top 50 Hard Rock + Metal Drummers of All Time.

Some of these drummers were chosen based on their world-topping chops; some based on their historical influence; others based on knowing when to not show off their virtuosity; and ofttimes they were chosen based on some combination of all the above, among other talents.

But the end goal was to celebrate 50 drummers who have helped define the music we love, and now dominate our record collections. So take a seat and take the ride, and check out our list of Top 50 Hard Rock + Metal Drummers of All Time by clicking here.…

Vinnie’s band Hellyeah is on tour with Slayer and King Diamond right now! Check out dates, locations, ticket links, and videos from the tour here.

Asked by Simon the WRRV Interview Series if he was looking forward to HELLYEAH’s participation in this summer’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival with SLAYER, Vinnie said: “Oh yeah, man. SLAYER is one of my favorite bands of all time, and to be on a tour with them is absolutely a dream come true. In 1999, we did a thing called the ‘Reinventing The Steel’ tour with PANTERA, when I was still with them, and SLAYER was part of that, and it was a great tour. And we’ve just been killer friends for a long time. So playing with them, and also the mighty KING DIAMOND, is gonna be a dream come true, man. It’s gonna be something I’m really looking forward to, and every metalhead needs to be there this summer.”
