Asked by Simon the WRRV Interview Series if he was looking forward to HELLYEAH’s participation in this summer’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival with SLAYER, Vinnie said: “Oh yeah, man. SLAYER is one of my favorite bands of all time, and to be on a tour with them is absolutely a dream come true. In 1999, we did a thing called the ‘Reinventing The Steel’ tour with PANTERA, when I was still with them, and SLAYER was part of that, and it was a great tour. And we’ve just been killer friends for a long time. So playing with them, and also the mighty KING DIAMOND, is gonna be a dream come true, man. It’s gonna be something I’m really looking forward to, and every metalhead needs to be there this summer.”

Superjoint at Hellfest 2015

Today (June 24) a new interview with Philip was posted by Joey Cutler of Graffiti (www.grafwv.com) Here are some excerpts concerning Superjoint from that interview:
Graffiti: So, we learned that Superjoint is back and hitting the road. I mean, it’s obviously something that had been talked about on Facebook, but now the dates are set. What made you choose now to bring this thing back? I know that Superjoint played your Housecore Horror Festival.

Anselmo: Yeah I was kind of skeptical at first, when we were asked to do that. And believe it or not – rest in peace – it was [true-crime author and Housecore Horror Film Festival co-founder] Corey Mitchell’s idea. Oh man, bless that guy’s heart. I mean he pushed for it and pushed for it, and he got it. The truth is it was fun jammin’, it was a blast to do. You know, I consider myself a kind of free agent, I mean, I do all kinds of stuff. I know I sing in Down, but I’m really into a lot of different projects and this is just something to do because it’s fun, man.

Graffiti: So playing with Superjoint again is a good thing for you?

Anselmo: Oh yeah. I mean, those guys are all just, again, fun. And the same thing goes for Kevin Bond.

Graffiti: Yeah, while we’re talking about Kevin, I know that not everyone has attached to this.

Anselmo: Yeah, we’ve gone through like three different bass players, the most prominent being Hank III, of course – I’ll just say that right now Hank is in the middle of a very important part of his life where he needs to focus on Hank – We all love him and only want the best for him. It’s nothing bad, by the way, it’s just a pain in the ass for him right now. He’s healthy and great, so no worries there. He’s honestly just really busy and doesn’t really have time to be a part of this Superjoint experience, which leads me to Stephen [Taylor] and Blue [Joey Gonzalez]. Obviously Blue is in Warbeast and also plays in the Illegals with me, as does Stephen. Those guys are f—-n’ awesome. And once again, down right handsome devils Kevin Bond, with those child-bearing hips. I’m tellin’ you man, we are a group of handsome f—-n’ devils!

Graffiti:
Then this is the live line-up for this summer’s ‘It Takes Guts’ tour?

Anselmo: Oh yeah, 100 percent, brother.

2nd wave of bands announced for Philip’s Housecore Horror!

Housecore Horror Festival IS BACK.
Corey Mitchell, this is for you.
We love you, brother.
***********************************************************************
Legendary metal frontman and Housecore Records founder Philip Anselmo, is bringing his horror-themed film and metal festival back for a third year. After a great ride in Austin, the festival will kick off in San Antonio, Texas at the Aztec Theatre on November 13th -15th, 2015.

The decision to return was driven by the desire to honor his friend and festival co-founder, Corey Mitchell, who tragically passed away last October. Mitchell was the driving creative force behind the festival’s success, and Anselmo believes there is no better way to pay tribute to his friend than to carry on for a third year.

“I’ve got a great team in place to help make this what Corey and I wanted it to be,” he says. “There are a lot of mixed emotions here because no one can replace him. But, we know he would want this to continue and so that’s what we’re going to do. We miss him and think about him every day.”

In addition to showcasing the best in extreme metal, the festival will screen film gems from the personal vaults of both Anselmo and Mitchell. Horror filmmakers are encouraged to submit their films and winners will be selected in various categories and given the coveted Rot-Scar Award. “When Corey and I started this thing, it was important to us that we help independent filmmakers get their incredible work discovered,” Anselmo continues. “Nothing has changed, in that respect.”

The Housecore Horror Festival III is Friday, November 13 to Sunday November 15. at 10:00am in CST Aztec Theater, San Antonio, TX

The Housecore Horror Film Festival is now officially accepting 2015 film submissions!

VINNIE PAUL: Heavy Metal Festivals Wouldn’t Get Same Kind Of Support In America as they do in Europe

VH1 includes Pantera in it’s list of “The 10 Greatest Non-Heavy Songs By Heavy Metal Bands”

From VH1.com: “Sold out.” “Gone soft.” These are phrases we hear when metal bands step a toe in the land of the light. Perhaps inspired by my recent article about heavy bands that took huge left turns with respect to their creative direction, it got me thinking about how much I enjoy when metal bands include something different on an already heavy album: a token curveball among a collection of 100 mph fastballs.

Because it’s coming from a heavy band, I almost appreciate it more when we get a glimpse into the more vulnerable side of genre known for projecting unyielding strength and stoic resolve. Often it affects me more than listening to a folk artist like Jack Johnson where the entire soundscape is sensitive, quiet, and beautiful. I yearn for the peaks and valleys, the yins and yangs.

As I was formulating this list, I had to set up some parameters:

First, what classifies as a heavy band? I could have included Alice In Chains’ “Nutshell”, which is a monumentally popular track, loved by metalheads and normal folks alike. Is Alice In Chains a rock band? A metal band? It’s difficult to say, but I felt that they released a substantial quantity of acoustic, lighter music that it’s basically just part of their sound.

Coming in at #6; Pantera – “Suicide Note Pt. I”

There was a big temptation on my behalf to include “Planet Caravan”, Pantera’s haunting Black Sabbath cover that closed Far Beyond Driven. The more I thought about it, I realized Pantera deserved to be recognized for an original song. Their versatility is really what made them the biggest metal band of their era. Like Metallica before them and Slipknot after, being the top dog requires serious range. Even though “Suicide Note Pt. I” is an acoustic song, it never loses any of the intensity Pantera was known for. Much of it had to do with Phil Anselmo’s vocal delivery, which was as emotive as it was masculine, but never felt forced. From “Cemetery Gates” to “Hollow” to “Floods”, these guys always knew how to paint with different colors. This type of breather in the midst of crushing jams is what was missing from Pantera’s swan song, Reinventing the Steel.

25. “10’s”
The Great Southern Trendkill (1996)

One of Pantera’s most haunting compositions, “10’s” comes into focus slowly, floating in on an ethereal, if crusty-sounding, bent-note Dimebag riff. The warped guitars and slow pacing provide an appropriately uneasy environment for a weary vocal from Phil Anselmo, who documents a man “disgusted with [his] cheapness” and destroying himself from the inside out through addiction.

An acoustic guitar interlude and a liquid Dime solo that, for a few bars at least, unexpectedly wanders into major-key territory, allow a few seconds of sunshine to poke through the black clouds. But overall, “10’s” is positively chilling and all-consuming in its atmosphere of impending doom.

Vinnie Paul says HELLYEAH will begin to work on a new album in early 2016

Crazy G of NewEnglandConcertReviews.com conducted an interview with Vinnie Paul when HELLYEAH played at DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts on May 8. Hear the entire interview below. Following are some excerpts:

On the making of HELLYEAH’s fourth album, 2014’s “Blood For Blood”:
“It was a really trying CD at first. We knew we had a couple of bandmembers that really had lost their focus and were becoming a detriment to the band, so we parted company with [bassist] Bob [‘Zilla’ Kahaha] and [guitarist] Greg [Tribbett]. And myself, Tom [Maxwell, guitar] and Chad [Gray, vocals] wrote the record. I think we made the most intense HELLYEAH record ever.

On HELLYEAH’s continued success:
“We’ve worked very hard from Day One, [since] this band started, and we haven’t slowed down, we haven’t stopped, and we don’t intend on it. We’re not 25 years old anymore, so we don’t have any time to waste. We really enjoy what we’re doing, and luckily, all of us are in great health right now, happy and loving what we’re doing. And the stage is what we live for, man.”

On HELLYEAH’s upcoming activities:
“We really, from the start of this record [‘Blood For Blood’], wanted to do a complete two-year touring cylcle, which we really haven’t had the opportunity to do with any of the previous HELLYEAH records. We would put a record out, tour for a year and go right back and start working on another one. And so we’re finally getting into the second year of touring for this record, and it’s just starting. After this tour, we go straight to Europe, where [we’ll be] for a month, and as soon as we get back from there, we do [Rockstar Energy Drink] Mayhem [Festival] all summer with SLAYER and the mighty KING DIAMOND, which is gonna be an absolutely amazing tour; I’m really looking forward to that. And as soon as that’s done, we go to Australia and New Zealand, Japan and Indonesia, and then we come back and we do another run here early next year, which will be our final run, and then we start working on a new record.”
